ACOP Notice PUBLIC NOTICE PROPOSED REVISIONS TO THE ADMISSIONS & CONTINUED OCCUPANCY POLICY In accordance with Section 5A of the United States Housing Act of 1937 (USHA), as amended by Section 511 of the Quality Housing and Work Responsibility Act of 1998, the North Wilkesboro Housing Authority (NWHA) has prepared a revised Admissions & Continued Occupancy Policy for public review and comment for a forty-five (45) day notice period beginning May 9, 2025 to June 24, 2025. The purpose is to review the proposed changes and submit comments during this public comment period. The Admissions & Continued Occupancy Policy provides the NWHA’s policies in the administration of the Affordable Housing program policies for the Conventional Public Housing program. The draft Admissions & Continued Occupancy Policy is available for public inspection and review at the Housing Authority’s main Office located at 101 Hickory Street in North Wilkesboro. Interested persons can request an electronic copy by contacting the Housing Authority on (336) 667-3203. The Board of Commissioners will hold a Public Hearing for review of all comments previously received and to hear such additional comments and information that attendees at the Public Hearing may offer at is regularly scheduled meeting on June 24, 2025 at 12:00 a.m. After consideration of all comments, the Board will deliberate and vote regarding approval of the revised Admissions & Continued Occupancy Policy. Individuals are encouraged to provide comments prior to the public hearing at the North Wilkesboro Housing Authority office at 101 Hickory Street, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659 or by telephone to (336) 667-3203.

NWHA Waitlist The NWHA waiting list changes often. Please call to find out your position on the waiting list. If you have applied for housing but have not received an approval letter then you have not been added to the waiting list. Please wait until after you receive a letter to call about your status. Below are the number of applicants awaiting housing. Bedroom Size # of Applicants 1 94 2 60 3 14 4 18 5 4 Last updated December 3rd , 2025 Application Process and Procedures: Applicants can expect a letter of approval or denial within 2-3 weeks of application date. If you have not received a letter within 3 weeks please call the office to discuss your application. Applicants are not considered approved until receipt of approval letter. Please note that if you are denied housing you have the option to request a hearing with our director within 10 days of the date on your letter. If you fail to request a hearing, within 10 days, your application will become inactive and you will be required to reapply for housing consideration. Preference will be given to applicants who: 1. Receive SSI, SSA or Disability Income. 2. Are 62 years of age or older. 3. Resident Advisory Board NWHA RAB The Resident Advisory Board (RAB) provides the PHA and the residents with a forum for sharing information about the Agency's Annual Plan. Section 511 of the United States Housing Act and the regulations in 24 CFR part 903 require that PHAs establish one or more Resident Advisory Board(s) (RAB) as part of the PHA Plan process. RAB membership is comprised of individuals who reflect and represent the residents assisted by the PHA. The role of the RAB is to assist the PHA in developing the PHA Plan and in making any significant amendment or modification to the Plan. Family Investment Center FSS Program ROSS Program Youth Services Syview Center Map Resident Services Family Investment Center This "one stop" center provides public housing residents with resources to enable them to attain self-sufficiency. Services are provided through collaborative partnerships with area service agencies. Some of the services offered include: after-school program, case management, crisis intervention, and self-empowerment skills. Public Housing Family Self-Sufficiency The NWHA operate Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) for public housing residents. The FSS program is designed to help unemployed or underemployed residents achieve economic self-sufficiency. Participants are encouraged to obtain additional education, job training, counseling, volunteer experience, budgeting assistance and to learn healthy lifestyle behaviors. They are given five years to accomplish this goal and receive individual case management during the tenure of the program. Resident Opportunities for Self-Sufficiency NWHA operates the ROSS program which provides case managements and supportive service programs for the residents of public housing. Through this program residents are assisted with training, employment, transportation and other ancillary services to assist in their efforts to become self-sufficient. Youth Programs A variety of on-site, after-school, and year-round programs for children and youth are offered by NWHA in collaboration with agencies such as Communities in Schools, Wilkes Arts Council, Boys &Girls Clubs, and NC Agricultural Extension Program. These programs provide homework assistance, cultural enrichment and computer education which aid in preparing NWHA youth for the future.
